Barking & Dagenham Small Business Centre (BDSBC) client Barrington Palmer of Palmers Catering was last night announced the winner of the Best New Business award in the first ever Barking & Dagenham Business Awards.

The 2008 awards ceremony, hosted by Danish comedian and radio presenter Sandi Toksvig, was described by the event organisers as ‘An annual celebration and acknowledgement of the passion, the energy and the achievement of Barking & Dagenham businesses and the people behind them’.

In November 2007 Barrington approached BDSBC for help with launching his own catering business and over the next six months worked closely with his Business Counsellor on making this dream a reality.
After collecting his award Barrington gave special thanks to BDSBC staff and his business counsellor Barry Shamplin, for all of the support they had given him.

Over 120 businesses made applications to the various award categories, far exceeding the organiser’s initial hopes of 40, and the centre was delighted that BDSBC businesses to be shortlisted for awards on the night were Docklands Furnishing, The Silver Box and Advanced Heating Services.

The BDSBC Operations Manager, Mark Kass, congratulated Barrington on his win and added; “These Awards have really helped us capture and showcase the entrepreneurial spirit that exists across all of the communities of B&D and we’re really proud to have helped turn Barrington’s dream into an award winning business reality” Mark continued; “I’m confident that by continuing to work with Barry at BDSBC we can help Barrington create a truly solid, viable and sustainable business that will hopefully enable him to win some of the exciting Olympic contracts he’s set his sights on”
